The Senior Community Center is proud to introduce a new series of adult education classes designed for seniors age 60 and older. “Senior Class” includes sessions designed to enhance lifelong learning and engage seniors in a variety of subjects. Most classes will meet from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday evenings at the Senior Community Center, 1650 W. Second St. However, other classes will be scattered throughout our monthly activities.
Senior Class activities are open to all members of the Senior Community Center. Membership is free to all residents of Owensboro/Daviess County age 60 and older. Those wishing to join are invited to stop by the SCC between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, or call 270-687-4640 for more information.

If you have ever wanted to climb your family tree but didn’t know how to get started, this class is for you. This class will explore the basics of genealogy research and provide information about resources and procedures that will help in your search for ancestors and their stories.
September 8 @ 4:00 - Planting Spring Flowering Bulbs
Spring flowers begin in the fall! Annette Meyer Heisdorffer, Daviess County Cooperative Extension Service horticulture extension agent, will present a program about planting spring flowering bulbs now to enjoy next year. This program will include guidance about planting bulbs in landscapes and containers.
September 15 @ 4:00 - Passport Kitchen: Polish Cooking
Passport Kitchen: Polish Cooking – 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15 – Let’s go to Poland! Well, in the kitchen, anyway! Sharayha Clingenpeel and Katie Alexander of the Daviess County Cooperative Extension Service will teach and demonstrate the art of Polish cooking as we make classic Polish pierogi (dumplings) as part of their 4-H Passport Kitchen program! This hands-on program is limited to 15 participants so please reserve your space at the Senior Community Center office. (If you sign up and realize you cannot attend, let us know so we can give your seat to someone on our waiting list!)

September 22 @ 4:00 - Special Events
Come join Tim Ross, Owensboro’s director of public events, to learn how he identifies, schedules and coordinates all the great events that make our city such a great place to live! Tim and his team oversee signature events such as BBQ & Barrels, the Air Show, Fourth of July fireworks and Illuminate; and coordinate with nonprofit boards sponsoring events such as Friday After 5, the Owensboro Christmas Parade and so many more. This class is a special event you won’t want to miss!

October 6 @ 4:00 - Medicare and You
Melissa Polites, director of Union County Senior Services, will present information about navigating Medicare. This program will include facts about open enrollment and is designed to help seniors understand their options so you can make informed decisions that meet your needs. Learn why it is so important to conduct a yearly review of your coverage and compare eligible plans.
October 13 @ 4:00 - Elections, Licenses, Records and More!
Leslie McCarty, Daviess County clerk, will share information about the important services provided by her office. Learn about voter registration and how elections in our community are managed, as well as motor vehicle titles, licenses and registration; land and property records; and property and real estate taxes. Leslie will also share information about eCCLIX, which allows residents of Daviess County to view deeds, mortgages, wills and other legal documents online.
October 20 @ 4:00 - Good Shot! Basic Photography Skills
Whether you are still taking pictures on film with a traditional camera or capturing images on a smartphone, you want those photographs to capture the special people, places and events in the best way possible so you can enjoy them for years to come. This class will feature simple tips and techniques that will help you improve your photography skills right away!

How did our ancestors grieve? Sue Berry will share fascinating insights regarding Victorian mourning and funerary customs. This presentation will include an opportunity to view rare and historic items such as funeral cards and stationery, mourning jewelry and clothing worn to designate the timeline of mourning.
