The Senior Community Center is proud to introduce a new series of adult education classes designed for seniors age 60 and older. “Senior Class” includes sessions designed to enhance lifelong learning and engage seniors in a variety of subjects. Most classes will meet from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday evenings at the Senior Community Center, 1650 W. Second St. However, other classes will be scattered throughout our monthly activities.
Senior Class activities are open to all members of the Senior Community Center. Membership is free to all residents of Owensboro/Daviess County age 60 and older. Those wishing to join are invited to stop by the SCC between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, or call 270-687-4640 for more information.

October 27 @ 4:00 - Victorian Funeral Customs
How did our ancestors grieve? Sue Berry will share fascinating insights regarding Victorian mourning and funerary customs. This presentation will include an opportunity to view rare and historic items such as funeral cards and stationery, mourning jewelry and clothing worn to designate the timeline of mourning.
November 3 @ 4:00 - Field Trip to Maui's Indoor Theme Park
Join us on a Senior Class field trip to Maui’s! Events and outreach coordinator Terry Niles will guide us on a tour of all the games, rides and activities Maui’s has to offer. Come learn about our hometown’s newest entertainment venue, including go karts, laser tag, mini golf, bumper cars, arcade games – even a roller coaster! A van will provide transportation from the Senior Center (reserve your seat; first come, first served) or just meet us there (former Towne Square Mall location at 5000 Frederica St.). You must register in advance for this excursion!
November 10 @ 4:00 - Credible Mind
Credible Mind provides expert-rated resources to support emotional well-being. From managing stress to improving sleep and coping with anxiety, Credible Mind provides personalized tools to guide your mental health journey with self-directed access to articles, assessments, videos, podcasts and more. Laura Farmer, community engagement coordinator at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital, will share important information about this helpful resource.
November 17 @ 4:00 - Passport Kitchen: Japanese Cooking Class
Let's go to Japan! Well, in the kitchen, anyway! Sharayha Clingenpeel and Katie Alexander of the Daviess County Cooperative Extension Service will teach and demonstrate the art of Japanese cooking as part of their 4-H Passport Kitchen program! This hands-on program is limited to 15 participants so please reserve your space at the Senior Community Center office. (If you sign up and realize you cannot attend, please let us know so we can give your seat to someone on our waiting list!) This class begins at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17, and you MUST sign up in the office at 3001 W. Second St.

December 1 @ 4:00 - Wreath Making Class
You’ve seen Donna Wells’ beautiful wreaths in the Pincushion Gift Shop. Now come and learn how to make these beautiful wreaths for yourself! Cost is $35 and includes materials. Registration and payment must be made in person at the Senior Community Center office by 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20. This class is strictly limited to 12 participants so you MUST sign up at the Senior Community Center office! (NOTE: If you participated in this class last year, please wait until after Nov. 13 to register, in order to give new students an opportunity to make these beautiful wreaths.) This class begins at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 1.

Who decides where to put those roundabouts? How can I get a stoplight put up? When will that Highway 54 project be finished? Will the Greenbelt be expanded to reach downtown? You have questions – Tom Lovett has answers! As the Metropolitan Planning Organizer for the Green River Area Development District, Tom will share information about all things pertaining to transportation – and he welcomes your suggestions, ideas and input about how to make it easier to get around in Owensboro/Daviess County.
